PHENO HUNTING & CULTIVAR SELECTION
Posted on June 15 2026
The Pheno Hunt Process
- Germination: Start with a large batch of seeds (ideally 20-50+) from a reputable breeder to ensure a wide range of genetic expressions. Label every single seed.
- Cloning: Take clones of each plant before flipping them to flower. This ensures you can preserve the exact genetics of the winning plant (the "mother").
- Observation: Track structural and growth characteristics such as internodal spacing, root vigor, and branching habits. Discard males, runts, and plants that show signs of hermaphroditism under stress.
- Harvest & Evaluation: Dry, cure, and test the flower for cannabinoid content, terpene profile, and bag appeal.
- Selection: Eliminate sub-optimal candidates and keep only the standout cultivar(s) to progress to full-scale production.
Key Selection Criteria
When evaluating which cultivar to keep, hunters typically filter plants through these core pillars:
- Terpenes: The complexity, concentration, and uniqueness of the aroma and flavor.
- Trichome Production: The density, head size, and coverage of resin glands, which are crucial for both flower and extract quality.
- Sexual Stability: The plant's ability to resist throwing male pollen sacs ("nanners") when subjected to routine environmental stressors.
- Vigor & Resilience: Natural defense mechanisms against pests, pathogens, and environmental fluctuations.
- Structure & Yield: Biomass production and whether the plant supports its own weight and fits well into your specific grow space.
